September 1868: All my husband talked about was revolution. He told me, “Clarisa Prats, you have to be part of history and help the cause of the revolution”. I went to the market place and as I was buying some rice for today’s dinner I meat a woman named Mariana Bracceti. She was of firm character and free spirit. She was buying some thread for a flag she was working on, she told me “It is going to represent al the hopes and dreams of the fighting people of Puerto Rico”. Marian invited me to help her and that way I could be part of the revolution.
We started sowing two weeks before the big day. Mariana and I wasted a whole day just figuring out what colors to use. We finally decide on three colors blue, red, and white. The flag was going to have two blue squares on top fallowed by a two white squares at the bottom a cross in the very middle and a star at the top left corner of the blue square.
The next we started kiting the flag all day Marina entrusted me with cutting the four squares for the flag. She was going to do the star, which would be one of the hardest parts. I finished cutting the fabric and drew the layout for the cross, then Mariana and I placed everything together to see how it was going to look.
The next day we put all the pieces together and started the process of sowing. The flag was going to take some time to have everything in perfect place. Suddenly we heard word that the revolution was gong to be moved for the 23. We had to finish the flag and quick.
Mariana and I stayed up all night so that our commander Manuel Rojas could have his flag the day of the revolution. It came out beautifully and had the hopes and dreams of an oppressed generation.
Mariana and I saw from afar the flag being raised the day of the revolution. It was a wonderful site, I, Clarisa Prats was part of history. Goosebumps ran all over my body because history was being made a revolt was going on. We made history possible.
