My name is Walter Wurlsly; I am 25 and have been traveling across the islands of the Caribbean in search for adventure. I came across this island called Puerto Rico in which I saw a group of people fight for what they believed was just. I arrived at Puerto Rico on September 21, 1868 and from then on I started my tour of the island. I had been three days on the island when I came across a town called Lares and I saw a gathering of people from various towns. I asked around as to what was happening and I was told it was a movement of the people; they were going to fight for Puerto Rico’s independence. Within hours they had seized control of Lares without any sort of resistance, which astounded me because I believed I was about to witness a revolution right in front of my eyes. As it was all happening I couldn’t help but feel excited but I was a tad worried of what could become of this revolt, at any moment the government could start fighting back and that could’ve made it a very precarious scenario. I couldn’t help myself and my need of adventure got the best of me and so I joined these freedom fighters in their march towards San Sebastian. The amount of people that partook in this march was incredible I truly felt like I was part of history in the making, in this march I heard various things, one man told me that this revolt was actually planned to happen on the 29th but due to certain circumstances they were forced to change the date, this made me feel lucky because I had planned on leaving the island the 28th and would have never been able to see any of this. So there we were marching into San Sebastian, I was completely ignorant to the fact that these people were here to fight for their freedom not just march and so when we got to San Sebastian the Spanish militia was there waiting for us. I panicked and tried to run back but the revolutionaries pressed on and pushed me forward. I started hearing gunshots and began to panic, thankfully at this point the crowd began to run back allowing me to also get out of this mess which I led myself into. After running for about an hour I finally stopped and realized what I fool I had been. I had almost gotten myself killed all because of my ridiculous need of adventure that I read about in my novels. I thought myself a fool not just because I had almost died in a situation I could have easily avoided but because I was part of a revolution of people who believed that they could change their government, a group of people that didn’t go off doing crazy things because they might be adventurous but because deep down they know it’s the right thing to do and they are willing to give their lived for it. As I left the island on the 27th I felt lucky to have witnessed to this movement of the people, I felt saddened that in the end the government won and the revolution failed but nonetheless it showed me that these people craved change enough fight for it and one day they might acquire it.
