El Grito de Lares was one of Puerto Rico's most dramatic rebellions against spanish colonialism during the XIX century. Their cry was demanding an end to the despised Regimen de La Libreta, slavery, Spanish despotism and oppression. Even though the rebellion was seized in two days the long term effects proved effective. Slavery was abolished 5 years later and more freedoms were granted to the Puerto Ricans the following decade. This is an exercise done by the Puerto Rican History class at Commonwealth High School to remember those Civil Rights activist.
In this assignment you are to write from the perspective of the a Grito de Lares direct or indirect participant.(Woman, Children, jornalero, slave, governor, king, Guardia Civil, immigrant, hacendado etc..) Use your knowledge of the period and creativity to write a story (500-1000 words) about a day in the life of the Grito de Lares participant. Here are some questions to help guide your story:

What possessions do you have?
What are your plans? What are your concerns?
How are you feeling, physically and emotionally?
What happened to you today?
What dangers have you experienced?
What have you been eating? What are you wearing?
What have you seen? How does this rebellion make you feel?
