I am a jornalero, I am basically a slave but with a debt that I owe to my hacendado and I have rights like any other man. I have been working for my hacendado for twenty long hard working years and my debt will eventually be finished soon and then I can go back to my family and then find a steady job. I heard a group of friends talking about a rebellion that was going to set us free and make new laws that would make Puerto Rico a better island. I actually thought of joining this rebellion but I feared that their plans will be discovered soon and many people would be either arrested or killed by the guardia civil. I weighed the pros and cons if I join this rebellion and this was my conclusion: if I joined the rebellion I can help make a difference in my island’s government if it goes well, but if it doesn’t I have a high chance of getting arrested and never seeing my family again or even getting killed. I chose to participate in this rebellion even if it meant to lose my life. Days have passed and I heard several different plans. They were the following: 1. the rebellion, which consisted majorly of Lareños and Mayagüezanos, will go to all of their haciendas and tell people to fight against the Spanish government in Puerto Rico and then go to neighboring municipalities and do the same; the second one is that we will set a specific date in which this rebellion will take place and all the people that are part of this rebellion will walk to Lares and from Lares we would go to San Juan and along the way we will inspire others to join us. Also both plans will happen at the same time as the Cuban rebellion. The leaders of this rebellion chose the second plan as it would be better and more successful. Then something bad happened. The Guardia Civil were getting suspicious that there might be a rebellion in both Puerto Rico and Cuba. So we talked to our Caribbean brothers and chose to do it earlier. A rebellion of thousands of people walked to Lares and we threw our libretas to our hacendados houses. The Guardia Civil was everywhere! They started arresting rebels and they were also beating a lot of them too. I fought at least fifteen guards before surrendering to them due to physical exhaustion, then they beated me until I got knocked out and then got arrested. When I got in prison I saw a lot of my compatriots in there already and many more kept on coming. Many of them were extremely hurt and were under huge amount of pain. I have never seen this much suffering in a single place. I have been in prison for thirteen years and I am writing to anyone who will find this. I was one of the heroes of this rebellion that is called “El Grito de Lares” and in the end we all shouted “¡Libre!¡Puerto Rico Libre!”
